Conservation programme lead — upland forest restoration & long-term monitoring

I run multi-year forest restoration programmes and build the monitoring that proves whether they actually worked.

Nine years across watershed trusts and a regional parks authority, mostly on degraded conifer slopes: planting design, seed sourcing, contractor oversight, and the survey protocols that keep results defensible a decade later. I spend about half my time in the field with crews and half turning what they record into something a funder or a land manager can act on.

Looking for a programme lead role where monitoring is treated as part of the work rather than a reporting afterthought, and where I can keep a small field team stable across seasons.

  • Kestrel Ridge replanting

    Programme lead

A 240-hectare burn scar was replanted twice by previous contractors and failed both times. I paused planting for a season to map soil moisture and browse pressure first, then rebuilt the species mix around what the slope could actually hold.

    Scope
Four planting seasons, three contractor crews, one seed-collection partnership
    My part
Site assessment, species mix, contractor specifications, survival survey design
    Outcome
Third-year survival held well above the trust's threshold and the protocol was adopted for two neighbouring sites
  • Thornbeck Creek riparian buffer

    Field coordinator

Landowner-by-landowner negotiation along eleven kilometres of creek, fencing stock out of the channel and planting a mixed native buffer behind it. The hard part was never the planting.

    Scope
Nineteen private parcels, seasonal volunteer crews, shared maintenance agreements
    My part
Landowner liaison, planting plan, volunteer training, maintenance scheduling
    Outcome
Continuous buffer completed across the reach with maintenance commitments still held by the landowners
  • Standing monitoring protocol

    Author

The trust had fifteen years of survey data in incompatible formats. I wrote a single field protocol and a plain-language recording sheet that seasonal crews could use without a week of training, then back-mapped the older records onto it.

    Scope
All trust restoration sites, retrospective and ongoing
    My part
Protocol design, crew training materials, historic data reconciliation
    Outcome
Now the standard recording method across the trust's field programme
  1. Restoration Programme Lead

    Alder Watershed Trust
    • Hold the restoration portfolio across six upland sites, from site selection through to the monitoring that follows planting.
    • Write contractor specifications and supervise delivery on site rather than from a desk.
    • Line-manage two field officers and a rotating seasonal crew of six to ten.
    • Prepare the technical sections of grant reports and respond to funder queries on method.
  2. Field Coordinator, Riparian Programme

    Alder Watershed Trust
    • Ran the creek buffer programme end to end, including all landowner agreements.
    • Built the volunteer training that replaced ad-hoc briefings with a repeatable half-day session.
    • Introduced the first consistent survival survey across riparian sites.
  3. Vegetation Officer

    Marrowfield Regional Parks Authority
    • Surveyed and mapped vegetation condition across public reserve land.
    • Planned and supervised invasive removal on priority slopes.
    • Handled the seed collection calendar and the authority's nursery liaison.
  4. Seasonal Field Technician

    Marrowfield Regional Parks Authority
    • Planting, plot establishment and data recording across two field seasons.
